Itchy, flaky scalp? A barber's guide to fixing it
We see a lot of scalps. An itchy, tight or flaky scalp is very common, and it's often caused by everyday habits that are easy to change.
Common causes
- Harsh shampoo. Strong cleansers strip the scalp's natural oils and leave it tight and itchy.
- Product build-up. Wax, clay and pomade left on the scalp can irritate it and make hair feel heavy.
- Hot showers. Very hot water dries the scalp out.
- Not rinsing properly. Leftover shampoo or conditioner can irritate the skin.
- Cold weather and central heating, which dry out skin everywhere, including your scalp.
The barber's fix
- Switch to Tea Tree Shampoo. Tea Tree Shampoo cleanses and refreshes the scalp, and menthol gives an instant cooling feel that soothes itch.
- Leave it on for 30 seconds. Massage it into the scalp with your fingertips (not nails) and let it work before rinsing.
- Condition. Tea Tree Conditioner puts moisture back and keeps the cooling feel going.
- Wash out styling products properly. See our guide to washing out pomade, wax and clay.
- Turn the temperature down. Finish with lukewarm water.
Both products work on beards too, so one routine covers hair and beard.
When to see someone
If your scalp is red, sore, bleeding, or the flaking doesn't improve after a few weeks, speak to a pharmacist or GP, as some scalp conditions need a specific treatment.
Still not sure what you need? Message our barbers or ask in the chair next time you're in. We'll point you to the right product.
